Overview

SPC IS UPDATING THE REGIONAL SAFETY ACTION PLAN FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.

This is a different roadway safety plan that uses the Safe System Approach. The approach recognizes that humans makes mistakes & that deaths & suspected serious injury crashes are not an acceptable cost of traveling in your communities.

To develop this safety plan, we use data, local expertise, & public feedback to find the locations where people are most at risk of fatal or serious injury. We can identify projects, policies, and programs that solve these risks and we will work together
to implement them.

The goal is zero deaths & suspected serious injuries on our roadways. The Safe System is how we reach this goal.

The Plan aligns with:

Crash Data

The regional safety action plan is data driven, & makes use of census data, community insight & historic Traffic crash data

We’ve mapped 5 years of life-altering crashes, fatal & suspected serious injury. This includes crashes involving the people most exposed or susceptible: those that walk, bicycle, ride motorcycles, or use mobility devices.

You can find these data sets at PennDOT’s Crash Information Tool.

Outcomes

This plan helps identify changes we can make locally right away to save lives and prevent suspected serious injuries.

Key outcomes of this plan include:

  • Designated High Injury Network
  • Identifying projects & strategies that will reduce the number of fatal & suspected serious injuries
  • Creating a transparent platform for tracking progress in improving roadway safety

Stakeholders & Timeline

  • 2019-2023 crash data analyses: January – February
  • Public Engagement: February through April
  • 2024 Crash data updates: April
  • May: draft published for public comment in May
